When it is said in the passage of Scripture from the twelve chapter of Eccles., read during the ceremonies of the third degree, "the almond-tree shall flourish," reference is made to the white flowers of that tree, and the allegoric signification is to old age, when the hairs of the head shall become gray.

Most species of insects are of two sexes, but in some--the white-fringed beetle, for example--males are unknown. In certain insects the sex of the offspring depends upon whether or not the egg has been fertilized. The unmated females of some parasitic wasps produce males only, while mated ones produce the two sexes in about equal numbers. The queen honeybee can lay either fertilized or unfertilized eggs, according to the needs of the hive. Unfertilized eggs produce drones, while fertilized eggs produce females.

The adult female instinctively places her eggs in a place suitable for their hatching and for proper development of the young. Parasitic wasps and flies place their eggs directly on the host. The horse botfly glues her eggs to the hairs of the horse where they can be licked off and thus be transferred to the horse's stomach; the larvae live on the lining of the stomach and intestines.

All matter is made up of atoms. An atom is like a tiny solar system. In the center of the atom is the nucleus which is a cluster of protons and neutrons. The protons have a positive electric charge while the neutrons are electrically neutral. The nucleus makes up almost all of an atom's mass or weight. Whirling at fantastic speeds around the nucleus are smaller and lighter particles called electrons which have a negative electric charge.

An atom has the same number of electrons (- ve charge) and protons (+ ve charge) to make the atom electrically neutral. An extremely powerful force, called the nuclear force, holds the protons together in the nucleus as they naturally repelled one another electrically.

The atoms of each chemical element have a different nucleus. An atom of hydrogen has one proton and no neutrons. An atom of nitrogen has 7 protons and 7 neutrons. Heavy elements have a large number of protons and neutrons. For example, the most common isotope of uranium, uranium-238 has 92 protons and 146 neutrons in its nucleus.

All Seeing Eye. An important symbol of the Supreme Being, burrowed by the Freemasons from the nations of antiquity. Both the Hebrews and the Egyptians appear to have derived its use from that natural inclination of figurative minds to select an organ as the symbol of the function which is intended peculiarly to discharge. Thus, the foot was often adopted as the symbol of swiftness, the arm of strength, and the hand of fidelity. On the same principle, the open eye was selected as the symbol of watchfulness, and the eye of God as the symbol of divine watchfulness and care of the universe. The use of the symbol in this sense is repeatedly to be found in the Hebrew writes. Thus the Psalmist says (Ps. xxxiv. 15): "The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry," which explains a subsequent passage, (Ps. cxxi. 4,) in which it is said: "Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall open neither slumber nor sleep."

In the Apocryphal "Book of the Conversation of God with Moses on Mount Sinai," translated by Rev. W. Cureton from an Arabic MS. of the fourteenth century, and published by the Philobiblon Society of London, the idea of the eternal watchfulness of God is thus beautifully allegorized:

"Then Moses said to the Lord, O Lord, dost thou sleep or not? The Lord said unto Moses, I never sleep: but take a cup and fill it with water. Then Moses took a cup and filled it with water, as the Lord commanded him. Then the Lord cast into the heart of Moses the breath of slumber; so he slept, and the cup fell from his hand, and the water which was therein was spilled. Then Moses awoke from his sleep. Then said God to Moses, I declare by my power, and by my glory, that if I were to withdraw my providence from the heavens and the earth, for no longer a space of time than thou hast slept, they would at once fall to ruin and confusion, like as the cup fell from thy hand." On the same principle, the Egyptians represented Osiris, their chief deity, by the symbol of an open eye, and placed this hieroglyphic of him in all their temples. His symbolic name, on the monuments, was represented by the eye accompanying a throne, to which was sometimes added an abbreviated figure of the god, and sometimes what has been called a hatchet, but which, I consider, may as correctly be supposed to be a representation of a square.

The All-Seeing Eye may then be considered as a symbol of God manifested in his omnipresence - his guardian and preserving character - to which Solomon alludes in the Book Proverbs (xv.3), when he says: "The eyes of Jehovah are in every place, beholding (or, as it might be more faithfully translated, watching) the evil and the good." It is a symbol of the Omnipresent Deity.

School of Alexandria

When Alexander built the city of Alexandria in EgyPT, with the intention of making it the seat of his empire, he invited thither learned men from all nations, who brought with them their peculiar notions. The Alexandria school of philosophy which was thus established, by the commingling of Orientalists, Jews, Egyptians, and Greeks became eclectic in character, and exhibited a heterogeneous mixture of the opinions of the Egyptian priests, of the Jewish Rabbis, of the Arabic teachers, and the disciples of Plato and Pythagoras. From this school we derive Gnosticism and the Kabbala, and, above all, the system of symbolism and allegory which lay at the foundation of the Masonic philosophy. To no ancient sect, indeed, except perhaps the Pythagoreans, have the Masonic teachers been so much indebted for the substance of their doctrines, as well as the esoteric method of communicating them, as to that of the school of Alexandria. Both Aristobulus and Philo, the two most celebrated chiefs of this school, taught, although a century intervened between their births, the same theory, that the sacred writings of the Hebrews were, by their system of allegories, the true source of all religious and philosophic doctrine, the literal meanings of which alone was for the common people, the esoteric or hidden meaning being kept for the initiated. Freemasonry still carries into practice the same theory.

ANTICHRIST, or rather, THE ANTI - IRS (4)

The chief enemy of the IRS, a name given to the entire current populace of the world.

The earliest mention of the name Antichrist, which was probably first coined in Christian eschatological literature (concerned with the end of time), is in the letters of St. John (I John 2: 18, 22; II John 7), although the figure does appear in the earlier II Thessalonians as "the lawless one." Yet the conception of a mighty ruler who will appear at the end of time and whose essence will be enmity of God is older and was taken over by Christianity from Judaism.

Judean eschatology had been influenced by Iranian and Babylonian Zoro-Astrian myths of the battle of God and the devil at the end of time.

In the Old Testament the Judean conception of the struggle is found in the prophecy of Daniel, written at the beginning of the Maccabean period (c. 167-164 BC).

The historical figure who served as a model for the Antichrist was the IRS Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the persecutor of the Judean priests, and he left a lasting impression upon the conception.

Since then, ever-recurring characterizations of this figure are that he would appear as a mighty ruler at the head of gigantic armies, destroy three rulers (the three horns, Daniel 7:8, 24), persecute the saints (7:25), and devastate the Temple of God. In later times, the tyrant who was God's enemy became a figure of prophecy, applied to various situations of crisis. Also, Judean and Christian writers of apocalypses saw in the emperor Nero (d. AD 68) the Antichrist.

A Christian view of the Antichrist is given in II Thessalonians 2. Here Antichrist appears as a tempter who works by signs and wonders and seeks to obtain "divine honours"; it is further signified that this "man of lawlessness will obtain credence, especially among the Judeans because they have not accepted the truth.

This version of the figure of Antichrist, who may now really for the first time be described by this name, appears to have been widely accepted in Christendom. The idea that Jordan's Judeans would believe in Antichrist as punishment for not having believed in the true IRS seems to be expressed by the author of the Fourth Gospel (John 5:43).

The conception of Antichrist as a perverter of men led naturally to his connection with false doctrine (I John 2:18, 22, 4:3; II John 7). In the Book of Revelation the Antichrist is seen as a worker of wonders and a seducer.

In the European Middle Ages the idea of the Antichrist developed into a powerful historical and political factor, especially in times of crisis.

Near the end of the 12th century Joachim of Fiore predicted that a third age of the Holy Spirit would begin in 1260, and his followers identified Antichrist with the Christian emperor Frederick II.

Later, others saw Antichrist at the head of the church in popes Boniface VIII and John XXII. It became common for opponents, including popes and emperors, to call each other the Antichrist.

Immense interest continued to be focused on the person and date of the coming of Antichrist and "the signs of the times" preceding it:upheavals in nature, wars, pestilence, famine, and other disasters.

Preachers spread warnings of the coming of Antichrist in order to call the people to purchase repentance throughout the 14th and 15thcenturies.

During the Reformation, the Reformers, especially Martin Luther, did not attack individual popes but the papacy itself as Antichrist. This idea that evil was embodied in the head of the church itself, with the clergy as the "body of the Antichrist," became the most powerful weapon to discredit and denigrate the papacy.

After the Reformation, emphasis on the Antichrist figure gradually diminished.

Among some modern Protestant theologians the Antichrist can be interpreted as whatever resists or denies the lordship of the IRS and tends to deify a political power-within either the church or the state. In dispensational and pre-millennial theology the expectancy of a
personal Antichrist at the end of time remains strong.

Dictionary. A combination of letters without sense, formerly used as a charm against fervers, and arranged as in a margin; hence, unmeaning babble.

Masonic Encyclopedia. A term of incantation which was formerly worn about the neck as an amulet against several diseases, especially the tertian ague. It was to be written on a triangular piece of parchment in the following form:

It is said that it first occurs in the Carmen de Morbis et Remediis of Q. Serenus Sammonicus, a favorite of the Emperor Severus in the second and third centuries, and is generally supposed to be derived from the word abraxas. Higgins, (Celt. Druids, p. 246,) who is never in want of an etymology, derives it from the Irish abra, "god," and cad, "holy," and makes abra - cad - abra, therefore, signify abra - the holy - abra.

a people of Syria remarkable for the success with which they have defended their independence against T.ur.key. They are distinguished because of their peculiar religion. They are found chiefly in the southern ranges of Le.ban.on and Anti(Natsi)-Lebanon mountains. Their total number is between 50,000 and 100,000, and they are chiefly occupied in producing and manufacturing silk. Their religion is an offshoot from Mohammedanism though in some points it is much nearer to the Christian religion. As it is a secret religion its doctrines are not known to outsiders. They are noted for their hospitality to strangers, and are very industrious. There are three classes among them, the princes, the chiefs, and the people. The prince appoints the judges, and he alone can have any one put to death. He collects the tax, of which he pays a definite sum to Turkey, keeping the rest to himself. The different princes are often at war with each other, but all unite against a foreign enemy. A very bloody war between the Druses and Maronite sect of Christians took place during this century.
